Welcome to Sundre and Area
Sundre is located at the base of the Rocky Mountain Foothills in West-Ccentral Alberta on the banks of the Red Deer River. It is 40 kms west of the Town of Olds and 130 kms northwest of Calgary on Highway #27.
A flourishing, friendly, community of approx. 2,300 people, it derives it's vitality from the rich agricultural base, forestry resources, and oil deposits that surround it in the Mountainview County. More recently, awareness of the diverse recreational opportunities in the area have resulted in a significant increase in tourism, and tourist related activities.
Sundre retains the same warm, hospitable atmosphere as it did in the days when Russ Greenwood drove his team of buffalo down Main Street. Take a carefree stroll through the streets and browse through the shopping malls and stores. Hotels, motels, and a varied choice of restaurants all offer complete services.
The town is a spiritual and gifted community with numerous churches and retreats, youth camps and active community groups. The community provides a playschool, junior high school and senior high, as well as a school for Individual Learning - ECS to Grade 12.
Sundre has its own paved and lighted municipal airport and is easily accessible by two mayor highways. To promote an active and healthy lifestyle, there are an 18 hole and a 9 hole golf course, an indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, library, museum, rodeo and race track, ball diamonds, curling rink, skating arena, play grounds, cross-country skiing, hiking and cycling trails and a huge variety of other outdoor activities.
Sundre offers a full range of health services. There is a modern 34 bed hospital, staffed by five doctors, plus a 24 hour ambulance service. A public health unit and family and community prevention program serves the town and surrounding rural areas. For your safety, Sundre is well served by town and RCMP protection, as well as a rural and urban volunteer fire department.
